You don't have to be a complete expert in the topic, you just have to be motivated to speak about it with accuracy and enthusiasm and know more than most of the other people also interested in this topic. Our good friend Othniel Seiden, MD teaches "Sex in the Golden Years" and sells that book as the textbook for his class, but all the rest of his many books* are available after class has finished. Teaching is a way to amplify your hourly wage and create secondary income streams. Read on!

Usually when you teach (unless you're a private tutor), you have several students in class. It takes you just as much time to lecture to 10 students as it does to teach 1. But if they've paid the tuition, then you have 10 times the money for the same amount of time. Now consider that if you can teach 10 students, you can probably teach 50 or 100 or even more. Your time involvement is identical, but the proceeds are proportionally greater!

Teaching usually has other perks. If you're a good teacher, most students want to learn more from you. So, if you have more than one subject you teach - you can probably sell them another class - or your book about the subject, or some other service that will enhance their learning.

If you want to go the teaching route, be sure and create class materials that you sell to the students in addition to the tuition.

Create basic course materials, then add on a set for 'continuing education' and sell those after class is done.Sell whatever else you have available at the back of the room - other books, services, other classes or even other people's stuff (create a commission arrangement with them as long as their products validate what you teach).

Get your student's names and contact information for your next class and ask them to refer you to someone they know - referral marketing is amazing.

Other people often have products and services they want promoted. Referral (idea #3) and commission or affiliate income (idea #4) from their products offer another way to create spin-off income streams from your main idea.

Writer's Summit Tip #16:

Make sure your editor is good at pointing out ambiguities in your text.

For example, "Tom, Dick and Harry went into the store. He bought a book."

Which "HE" is being referred to? This points out one of the many reasons authors can not edit their own books. Authors are just too familiar with the story line and have trouble seeing flaws like this. The author knows which 'HE' because he wrote him there. The reader, however, may not share the exact vision and needs some clarification.
